What is the Special Industry Project?

The Special Industry Project (SIP) is a work-integrated learning course at the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE) that has contributed to solving business cases for organisations across Australia.

Mimicking the real-world consulting environment, students enrolled in SIP become consultants, working in teams to devise the best solution to a business case. They work closely with the client who provides the business case, and a team of mentors from Scyne Advisory who provide coaching and guidance. The teams also attend weekly lectures that cover strategy and skills development.

SIP offers participating students a vast range of advantages:

  • a credited (6-unit course) semester-long industry project
  • the opportunity to work closely with students from diverse disciplines in an innovative and multidisciplinary environment
  • mentorship from Scyne Advisory management consultants, many of whom are CBE and ANU alumni
  • industry-based training with academic and industry guest speakers, specialising in the areas of management consulting, business administration, strategy, tourism, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary collaborations
  • networking and presentation opportunities.

No previous knowledge about consulting is required to enrol in this course. It is best suited to students who are enthusiastic and possess a creative problem-solving mindset, and who have a curiosity for management consulting and desire for cross-disciplinary learning.

Why enrol in SIP?

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • apply relevant discipline-based theoretical knowledge and skills to solve a transdisciplinary business problem
  • research, analyse, evaluate and propose practical solutions to the real-world business problem encountered by the client organisation
  • work effectively and professionally within a transdisciplinary team to develop practical solutions to a specified business problem
  • communicate effectively with peers and business professionals
  • construct a professional industry report
  • critically reflect upon the value of lifelong learning processes provided through the project experience.
