CBE policy on Overseas Short Courses - Undergraduate Students Only
CBE will grant a maximum of 12 units of credit for overseas short courses for the entire duration of your program (i.e., two 6-unit courses). These units will count as first year (1000-level) courses. Subject to the short course's content, workload, learning outcomes and other factors, CBE will consider whether the units of credit will count as a CBE List course (CBEA1900) or as an "out of College" course (CBEA1901). "Out of College" courses are also known as "ANU electives". Please note, the maximum limit for credit in a single program is 72 units.
Single degree students
Students enrolled in a CBE degree must have sufficient CBE List 1 courses or ANU electives available in their program to undertake an overseas short course.
Flexible Double Degree (FDD) students (both degrees in CBE)
Students enrolled in an FDD taking both CBE degrees may count these units as either CBE List 1 or ANU electives in place of the overlapping courses. These students must have sufficient CBE List 1 courses or ANU electives available in their program to undertake an overseas short course.
Flexible Double Degree (FDD) students (one degree in CBE)
Students enrolled in an FDD taking one CBE degree will not have overlapping courses so will not have ANU electives available. These students may undertake an overseas short course opportunity only if the nominated course(s) is approved by CBE Associate Dean (Education) or his/her delegate as a CBE List 1 course. These students must have sufficient CBE List 1 courses available in their program.
The dates for your nominated course(s) must not conflict or overlap with your ANU course dates.
Applications and supporting documents can be submitted to info.cbe@anu.edu.au.
The process and requirements for credit approval:
- You can only apply for credit on overseas short courses after completing the first year (or full-time equivalent) at ANU (48 units)*;
- Before commencing the overseas courses, you must email mobility.cbe@anu.edu.au. In your email, you must provide the course outline(s) for the course(s) you wish to study, along with a short paragraph about why you wish to study the course(s) overseas.
- Course outlines must include:
- Detailed course description
- Detailed list of topics covered
- Prescribed textbook and other required reading
- Prerequisites including the outlines or descriptions of those prerequisite courses.
- Contact hours
- Course requirements: The course must be taught in English, delivered face-to-face, and involve a minimum of 30 hours of class. However, CBE will consider a course delivered in a foreign language for students pursuing the Bachelor of International Business program or the International Business major, providing the course is deemed to be appropriate for the students’ academic program;
- CBE Student Services, in consultation with the program convenors, will assess the application and notify the student of a successful or unsuccessful application;
- Credit will be officially granted when you produce evidence of successful completion of the course(s) upon returning to ANU.
* Exception to the prior completion of 48 units is for UG students studying a PRIMO short course organised by Global Programs.
CBE will consider applications from students wishing to undertake overseas short-courses from the following institutions:
- Institutions that are ANU’s official exchange partners; or
- Institutions that are members of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU); or

ANU Virtual Exchange Alliance
CBE will consider applications from students wishing to participate in this initiative. Courses will only be considered if they include a final in person exam.
If approved, you will be granted unspecified first year CBEA units towards the generic elective component (out of college electives) of your degree. This means that Flexible Double Degree (FDD) students cannot apply for the Exchange.
If approved, the units will count towards the maximum of 12 units allowed for overseas short courses. This means you will not be able to complete a 12 unit overseas short course and also a 6 unit Virtual Exchange.
For more information about this exchange opportunity and a list of available courses, please see the Virtual Exchange Alliance.
