Mapping your study plan can be a confusing process, but the CBE Student Services Team is here to help!
To start with you will need:
- a copy of the blank study plan
- the Programs and Courses (P&C) page for your degree open to the Study tab so you can see the requirements of your degree
- make sure to change the year back to when you started your degree
- if you are a continuing student, a list of the courses you have already completed
- a list of any courses you have received credit or exemptions for, if applicable.
Step 1 (Optional)
If you are a continuing student, we suggest filling out the study plan with all of the relevant courses you have already completed and/or received credit or exemptions for. In the ‘type’ column, note whether it was a core course, restricted choice, elective, etc. You don’t have to do this step, but it can be easier to see what you have left to do when everything you’ve already completed is laid out in front of you.
Step 2
Using the information on the Study tab of your degree on P&C, identify the courses you need to complete and map them into the appropriate future semesters. You can check which semester a course is offered and what (if any) pre-requisite requirements it has by looking at the course’s P&C page, under it’s Study tab.
It is important to check both of these details carefully to ensure you are planning correctly. Course offerings can change, so it’s essential to review your study plan at the start of each semester to confirm your planned courses are still available.
Step 3
Once you have completed your map, please send it through to CBE Student Services (info.cbe@anu.edu.au) and we will happily check your plan and let you know if we see any issues or concerns.
Other handy tips and tricks!
- Sometimes you might find that there are courses that appear twice – either in a Flexible Double Degree (especially if your two degrees are both owned by CBE), or if you’re choosing a specific major or specialisation. We have information on how to manage this on our Student Guide website, under the ‘Double-Counting Guidance’ tab.
- If you have received exemptions, you may need to replace those with other courses. If there are specific courses you must choose the replacements from, these will have been mentioned in the approval email you received.
- If you have received credit, you do not need to replace the courses.
- If you have elective space, you can choose any course offered by ANU that you meet the pre-requisites for. There is no specific list of courses, instead you can use Programs and Courses to help narrow down some areas of interest (either by major, or by degree), and then you can find related courses and check their semester offerings and if they have any pre-requisite requirements.
- Make sure that you are following the overall rules of your program when mapping it out – for undergraduate students there are maximum numbers of 1000-level courses you can complete, for some postgraduate students you must do courses in a very specific order due to pre-requisite requirements.
