I'm not sure what courses to take? How do I make sure I can graduate?
The College of Business and Economics has multiple resources to help students plan their degrees and determine which courses to take.
If you are entering your first semester, please see the Enrolment Fast Track website for detailed instructions on how to be ready to start your degree, including recommended courses for your first semester.
To map out your whole degree and check you will meet all course requirements, please use the template and instructions on our 'How to create your study plan' webpage. You will need to review the Study Tab on your degree's Programs and Courses page to see the requirements. Dont forget to change the year to when you started that program!
The Class Summary for each course is avaliable via the Study tab on Programs and Courses two weeks before the start of semester - this gives detailed information about what each course will cover and what assessment items to expect.
I've been told I need to apply to be an 'observing student', what does this mean?
Being an 'observing student' on Canvas gives you access to the Canvas site and all of the learning materials without being formally enrolled in the course. This happens if you have not yet met the pre-requisites for the course, usually because you have a deferred or supplementary exam for the pre-requisite course.
Please carefully read the information on the 'Observing a course on Canvas' tab on the Student Guide page for information on how to apply.
I want to change a course after the self-enrolment deadline, how do I do this?
In certain circumstances you may apply to change your enrolment after the self enrolment deadline (the Monday of Week 2) using the CBE Late Enrolment Process.
Please read the information under the Late Enrolment tab on the Student Guide page to learn about the specific circumstances in which this is allowed, and how to apply.
How do I drop or add a course if I can't do it online in ANUHub?
If you cannot drop or add a course online in ANUHub, please fill out an Enrolment Variation form (PDF, 399KB). Send this, along with a screenshot of the error you are encountering on ANUHub, to CBE Student Services at info.cbe@anu.edu.au.
Please be aware that you must complete a course’s prerequisites before attempting to enrol into that course on ANUHub.
Please note that international students cannot drop courses via ANUHub - you can swap a course to another, but to drop it without selecting an alternate course you will need to complete a Reduced Study Load application.
I need permission to take a course - how do I get that?
Please read the information and instructions under the 'Prerequisite waivers' tab of the Student Guide page.
Can I ask to do a different course instead of a listed one?
All students must complete the courses listed on the Study Tab of their degree's Programs and Courses page. Occasionally, there may be a compelling reason to request to do a different course, such as unexpected changes in course offerings that impact study plans, or new courses being offered that complement existing courses within a program or major.
Students may request to do an alternate course by emailing the CBE Student Services team with the below information:
- The original course that you would like to change
- The alternate course code and course name
- 1-2 sentences to justify the relevance of the alternative course
- 1-2 sentences to explain how the alternative course supports your future career ambitions
These requests will be reviewed by the relevant academic. If approved, the change will be recorded on your academic record so that there is no issue when it comes time to your graduation. Please note that approval is not guaranteed, and further information may be required. It is your responsibility to check the semester offering and to make sure you meet any pre-requisite requirements of the alternate course.
How do I make sure that I am doing the right courses in order to graduate?
To make sure you are completing the correct courses for your program, please see the Programs & Courses page to view the remaining requirements for your program. Make sure to change the year in the top right corner back to the year you started your degree, so you follow the correct requirements.
If you need further assistance, you can email the CBE Student Services a copy of your study plan and they can check it to make sure you're on the right track. Email them at info.cbe@anu.edu.au.
How do I add the majors (UG), minors (UG), or specialisations (PG) I intend to do under my program?
To add a major, minor, or specialisation to your degree, please follow the instructions on the ANU Changing majors, minors & specialisations website to find out how to add it to your degree via ANUHub (Main Menu (compass button) > Navigator > ANUHub > Degree Management > Major, Minor & Specialisations).
Majors and minors are only avaliable in undergraduate degrees, and specialisations are avaliable in postgraduate or honours degrees. These willl appear on your transcript, but not on your testamur.
Please note the deadlines carefully, as you will not be able to process this change after the census date of each semester. It is not possible to add a major, minor or specialisation to your degree after you have completed the degree, so be sure to check ANUHub shows what you're expecting to see before your final semester. If you are unable to make changes, please contact info.cbe@anu.edu.au.

Please visit the CBE UG Exchange Overseas website and the ANU Global Programs page for information on how to find a suitable exchange program.
If you wish to study at a different overseas institution outside of normal ANU semesters, you may wish to take a short course. Please visit the CBE Overseas Short Courses website for more information.
If you want to complete a course at another Australian University and have it count towards your ANU degree, cross institutional study will help you to do this. Please note that if you complete study at another university while enrolled at ANU, it will not be credited to your ANU degree if you have not received approval for cross institutional study prior to attempting the course.
How do I apply for a semester's leave from my studies?
If you are an international student, you must apply for program leave. You can apply for a minimum of 6 months leave, and a maximum of 12 months leave. I have a timetable clash between lectures, what can I do?
While we try our best to ensure there are no clashes between core subjects, it can occasioanlly still happen. Ifyou have a timetable clash between two lectures you may either watch the lectures of one course online (espeically if both courses are required for your degree) or enrol in another course in your program (helpful if one of them is an elective).
If you need assistance choosing another suitable course, please view the course requirements for your program through the Programs & Courses website before contacting the CBE Student Services team at info.cbe@anu.edu.au.
I have a timetable clash between tutorials, what can I do?
If you have a clash between tutorial times and you are unable to attend a different tutorial timeslot, please contact the lecturer or convener of your course to discuss alternative arrangements.
Your lecturer's contact details may be found on the sidebar of each course's Programs and Courses page.
There are no free tutorials to enrol in, what can I do?
If all tutorials look full, please contact the lecturer/convener of the course. To ensure there is the right amount of tutorial options for all students enrolled in the course, not all tutorials are avaliable to enrol into straight away. Often more tutorials will open in the first few days of the semester, so please be patient.
Should I submit an extenuating circumstances application?
If you are unable to complete an assessment item by the due date, you may submit either an assessment extension (for less than 10 days) or an extenuating circumstances application via ANUHub. An extenuating circumstances application is used to apply for a deferred exam, or if you require an extension that is longer than 10 days.
Please note that you will require supporting documentation in both cases and there are deadlines to apply. More information can be found on the ANU's Extenuating Circumstances Application page.
How do I get a supplementary examination for my course?
Students will only be offered supplementary assessments if they meet certain eligibility criteria listed on the ANU Supplementary Assessment website. If you are offered a supplementary assessment (the course has a PX grade for the final grade), the University will contact you with further details after the results release date for the semester.
If you cannot attend your examination due to extenuating circumstances, please refer to information on applying for a deferred examination.
When will my supplementary or deferred examination be?
If you have been approved for a deferred examination or supplementary examination, you will be contacted through your official ANU student email account with further details.
From Semester 2 2025, there are two deferred exam periods. The first (DA1) is held directly after the standard exam period, and is for students who had short term unforseen circumstances that impacted their ability to attend the exam in the standard period. The second (DA2) is held before the start of the following semester, and is for students with longer term impacts, and for students with supplementary exams.
More information, including dates of each exam period, can be found here.

If you’re not sure what kind of benefit your scholarship provides, please check your offer letter and Conditions of Award.
If I transfer my degree, can I keep my CBE scholarship?
If you transfer between two CBE degrees, the decision to let you keep your scholarship is made on a case-by-case basis. Factors such as whether your program end date will remain the same, and your academic achievement and progression criteria from previous semesters will be considered.
If you transfer from a CBE degree to a degree run by another College, you will not be able to keep a CBE scholarship.
Contact scholarships.cbe@anu.edu.au before you apply for a program transfer to determine if you will be able to keep your scholarship. If you do not advise us of changes to your program, your scholarship may not be transferrable.
How does the CBE Scholarships and Prizes team determine if I can keep my scholarship?
At the conclusion of each semester, the CBE Scholarships and Prizes team will compare your results to the progression criteria in your scholarships Conditions of Award – this is listed as a percentage average, or a GPA.
If you do not meet progression requirements for the first time, you will be sent a probation letter.
If you do not meet progression requirements for the second time (this does not have to be consecutive), your details will be considered by a CBE Committee. You will be invited to a Show Cause panel (explain your circumstances) to determine if you can keep your scholarship.

For more information on both options including how to apply for them, please visit the ANU Invitation to Graduate website.
What date will show on my testamur?
The Conferral date represents the official date of your award, as recorded on your academic record and graduation documents. Once your award has been conferred, your official graduation documents, your Testamur (certificate), Academic Transcript, and Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS), are produced and released via My eQuals. These documents confirm your completion, qualification, and eligibility to use your Award title.
Your transcript may also show your completion date - this is the date that you were deemed to have met all the requirements of your degree, and is usually a few days after your final semester's result release date. If you defer your conferral, there may be a gap of 6 to 12 months between your completion date and your conferral date.
These dates are part of the official process of awarding a student with their degree, and cannot be changed.
What should I do to prepare for my graduation?
The ANU provides a checklist for students to ensure they are prepared for their graduation day. Topics to keep in mind are checking that your personal details on ANUHub are correct and hiring your graduation regalia.
For the full checklist, please visit the ANU Graduation preparation website.
