Every year, The Australian National University (ANU) College of Business and Economics (CBE) takes a moment to recognise the outstanding contributions that its teaching staff make to the College and ANU.
The award celebrates long-standing teaching staff who continue to inspire and raise the next generation of thinkers, while also highlighting emerging teachers who are making an impression in the classroom.
Congratulations to Dr Chirag Kasbekar, Yuanyuan Liu, Dr Kathy Wang, Associate Professor Birgit Muskat, Dr Karryna Madison, Ravini Abhayarathne, Angela Romero Martinez, and Dr Louise Mayo AM.

Kathy Wang – Excellence in Teaching
ANU Research School of Accounting
A passionate and innovative educator, Kathy committed to transforming the first-year accounting experience through engaging, future-focused, and industry-relevant teaching. Convening a core postgraduate accounting course with enrolments of up to 1,000 students per semester, she creates intellectually stimulating learning environments at scale. Drawing on her experience in the Commonwealth Department of Finance, Kathy integrates contemporary policy and real-world accounting practice into her teaching, enriching student learning through authentic, relevant, and highly applied educational experiences.

Chirag Kasbekar – Excellence in Teaching
ANU Research School of Management
Chirag creates intellectually rigorous and highly engaging learning environments through his novel ‘Relate and Evaluate’ pedagogical framework, which empowers students to critically test and refine their assumptions through theory, evidence, and reflection. He augments this through experiential learning, structured reflection, and thoughtful integration of innovative classroom activities. His teaching fosters the skills students need to be able to shape a complex world – open inquiry, critical reasoning, confidence, and deep knowledge of an institutionally complex environment. His broader contributions through curriculum development, mentoring, and university service demonstrate a sustained and influential impact on teaching and learning.

Yuanyuan Liu – Commendation for CBE Award for Teaching Excellence (early career)

Yuanyuan is an inspiring and student-centred educator who creates engaging, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating learning environments across information systems, business, and technology management. Through innovative reciprocal learning approaches, scaffolded inquiry, and real-world industry integration, Yuanyuan empowers students to think critically, collaborate confidently, and apply theory to practice. Her genuine care, mentorship, and commitment to equitable participation have had a profound impact on student confidence, belonging, and success, with students consistently describing her teaching as inspiring, transformative, and highly engaging.

Ravini Abhayarathne – Excellence in Tutoring
ANU Research School of Management
An engaging and student-centred tutor, Ravini brings expertise in entrepreneurship, innovation, and international business to create interactive and applied learning experiences. She integrates contemporary business theory with real-world examples to foster critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving. Through active learning strategies, educational technologies, and reflective teaching practice, Ravini supports student confidence and engagement in large cohorts.

Angela Romero Martinez – Excellence in Tutoring (early career)
ANU Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics
Angela creates highly interactive tutorials that position students as active participants in problem-solving and learning. Through guided questioning and discussion, she fosters independence, curiosity, and critical thinking. Her teaching draws on visuals, metaphors, and real-world examples to present complex concepts in accessible and engaging ways, supporting diverse learners and reducing cognitive overload.

Birgit Muskat – Excellence in Research Supervision

An outstanding HDR supervisor, Birgit demonstrates a sustained commitment to excellence, integrity, and the development of independent scholars. Through her supervision she has fostered impactful research addressing real-world economic, social, and environmental challenges. Birgit’s developmental and relationship-centred approach combines high expectations with strong student support, resulting in excellent graduate outcomes and collaborative research outputs.

Karryna Madison – Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning
ANU Research School of Management
Karryna has transformed organisational change education through innovative, research-led teaching that challenges traditional linear models of change management. By positioning students as critical and reflective change makers, she integrates experiential learning, diverse and Indigenous perspectives to deepen engagement and develop students’ analytical, ethical, and practical capabilities. Karryna’s teaching fosters inclusive participation, psychological safety, and strong connections between theory and lived experience.

Louise Mayo AM – Commendation for CBE Award for Indigenous Education
ANU Research School of Management
Through her role as Head Tutor for the ANU First Nations Graduate Certificate in Management, Louise has made a great contribution to Indigenous education by creating culturally safe, relational, and empowering learning environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Drawing on Indigenous pedagogies and culturally responsive practice, she combines academic guidance with mentoring and pastoral support to foster confidence, capability, and belonging. Her collaborative and student-centred approach supports high academic achievement while recognising and valuing students’ lived experiences.
