Giving it all to give back

For Huy Nguyen, graduating with a Bachelor of Actuarial Studies wasn’t without its trials.

“I faced moments where everything felt out of place, but I persevered. It’s been a challenging yet rewarding experience, and I’m grateful for the growth and resilience I’ve developed along the way,” he shares.

Now an honours-year candidate, Huy’s desire to improve human welfare and contribute to the financial stability of individuals and organisations has fuelled him through the long hours spent working through numbers and statistical models.

“My passion lies in applying quantitative approaches to tackle challenges. As someone originating from Vietnam, I want to promote these problem-solving methodologies and support the growth of the insurance industry in my country, where it remains relatively underdeveloped.”

And while Huy invested significant effort in gaining technical knowledge, the key takeaway from his degree wasn’t just mastering the numbers.

The true highlight was the realisation that effectively communicating the implications of numbers is just as important as deriving them. This insight has been invaluable and has shaped the way I approach problem solving in a professional context.

In addition to applying himself to his degree, Huy took his hustle to the next level, including working as a tutor, serving as a school ambassador, and leading a cultural club.

“Tutoring provided an excellent opportunity to develop my communication and public speaking skills, which are essential for my future career. The experience enhanced my technical understanding and built confidence in conveying ideas effectively,” he says.

These extra-curricular activities, coupled with his studies, also provided networking opportunities for Huy.

“One of the most valuable aspects of my time at ANU has been the opportunity to connect with incredible people, including fellow students and alumni. These connections have opened doors to mentorships, collaborations, and potential job opportunities.”

With so much going on, Huy took advantage of his surroundings to recharge, with the perfect places to disconnect not too far away.

“Walking along University Avenue, surrounded by greenery, is a wonderful way to de-stress during busy times. Another spot I enjoy is Kambri, a vibrant hub where most of the University’s cultural events take place. These events not only provide a relaxing break but also offer great opportunities to socialise, make friends, and expand your network,” he says.

Beyond campus, Canberra’s stunning natural landscapes are perfect for unwinding. Going on hikes and visiting scenic lookouts are some of my favourite activities to have fun with my friends and clear my mind.
