The energy transition is going better than you think

A 2026 Fred Gruen public lecture presented by Dr Guy Debelle

Hosted by The Australian National University Research School of Economics

Guy discusses the current state of play in the energy transition, highlighting what has been accomplished to date and what challenges and opportunities lie ahead. The highlights include the increasing penetration of renewables in energy generation and the extraordinary rise in battery storage, which has seen declines in wholesale electricity prices, while they have been rising elsewhere round the world. However, challenges lie ahead in decarbonising sectors, such as heavy-vehicle transport, air travel, cement and parts of manufacturing. Australia has a huge opportunity to export its abundant endowment of clean energy – the open question is which form those exports will take.
