Momentum Mentor Program Commitment & Eligibility
To qualify as a Momentum mentor, you must:
- have three or more years of professional workforce experience;
- hold or obtain a current, Working With Vulnerable People card (WWVP card) - free for volunteers.
Mentors can be located in Canberra, interstate Australia or overseas.
The process for mentors is split into three phases:
- Complete the Mentor Application Form to register your interest in becoming a mentor;
- Matching with a Mentee and accepting the agreement;
- The Program Contents - a minimum of 5 one-on-one meetings with your mentee.
The Momentum Team matches student mentees with industry mentors to facilitate a professional development journey around 5 key themes: Leadership, Communication, Personal Brand & Career Development, Critical Thinking & Problem Solving, and Teamwork.
During the program, Mentors are invited to attend themed mentee workshops and meet-ups exclusive to the Momentum cohort.
Upon conclusion of the Momentum program, your formal program commitment is completed. You may then choose to conclude your program commitment, express interest for the following program offering with a new mentee and/or continue your current mentorship on an informal basis, if mutually agreed upon by both parties.

The CBE Momentum program is a not-for-credit mentoring and professional development program offered to current CBE undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Industry Mentors are invaluable in providing expert advice and guidance to support students in their development and in achieving career goals.
The CBE Momentum program is open to Industry Professionals who typically have three or more years of professional workforce experience and who have a willingness to share their time, expertise and experience.
Industry Professionals may register their mentoring interest via our application form at any time. The CBE Momentum team will contact interested parties for suitability and availability in line with Key Program Dates for the Momentum program. The selection of students and mentors to participate in the Momentum is at the discretion of the CBE Momentum team.
The amount of mentoring time you devote to your mentorship is flexible but an absolute minimum of one hour meeting per month is required. Most Momentum mentors meet with their mentee for one hour per fortnight, and maintain communication via email, text or phone in between to build a valuable mentoring partnership.
You may agree to meet more frequently, or agree to email or have phone contact between scheduled meetings. Mentoring partnerships run for the duration of the program but, if agreed on by both parties, may extend in an informal capacity upon the conclusion of the program.
Students from the ANU College of Business and Economics may, as a start, be studying the following:

- Professional Accounting

Many of our students are enrolled in Flexible Double Degrees and may be completing two degree programs concurrently (including combined with a degree outside of the College of Business & Economics).
Students are selected via a selection process. In addition, they must complete compulsory pre-requisite requirements and submit their online application to be eligible for consideration.

- Must have successfully completed a designated number of courses (UG)
This is dependent on individual mentee needs and aspirations. All mentees are required to complete a series of themed milestones, prior to each meeting. Mentors may provide feedback and guidance on mentees milestones, during the meeting. Advice and guidance may also include general career guidance, understanding your role, history or industry, career planning and pathways, personal encouragement and confidence building, and/or specific guidance on searching or interviewing for jobs and internships.
Your first meeting is the opportunity to discuss your Mentees specific needs and expectations, as well as set the parameters of your mentorship (when and how often you will meet, how you will communicate between meetings etc.).
The Mentor Guidebook will be sent to all participating mentors at the commencement of the program. The Guidebook lists suggested potential mentoring topics, and a sample structure for your discussions, to assist in maximising the value of each meeting.
We recognise our mentors are busy professionals, volunteering their time and experience to support our students. Mentees are encouraged to take responsibility for initiating contact and organising meetings. Building trust and a valuable mentoring partnership requires two-way communication, and at times, mentees may require gentle encouragement or support to help them feel comfortable in doing so.
Momentum mentors are strongly encouraged to respond to their mentee in a realistic and timely manner to assist in building trust and rapport and increase the value of your mentoring partnership.
Students (mentees) are matched with a mentor at the start of the Momentum program. Matches will be made based on a number of factors. This may include a shared learning style and the students indicated areas for development against your indicated areas of specialisation. A shared academic background, students' career aspirations, and objectives for the mentoring relationship may also be taken into consideration.
Matching is at the discretion of the CBE Momentum team.
Yes, though in some cases we may not have an applicant who meets your requirements.
Mentors invited to join the program will be required to complete an online profile. When completing this, please be as detailed as possible to assist in the matching process. If we do not have a student suited to your requested requirements, you will have the opportunity to express interest for the following intake.
Meetings can be held face-to-face, in a mutually convenient location at a time agreed upon by both parties. Mentors located outside the Canberra region have the opportunity to connect via phone or video conferencing technology, in addition to email.
We encourage you to first discuss this with your Mentee. If you are unable to resolve a matter between you and your Mentee, you can seek advice and guidance from the CBE Momentum team. We will provide our full support to resolve the situation in a positive manner for both parties.
