Setting her sights on ANU
Graduating student Yanin Wongtharua received the idyllic university experience when she began her studies at The Australian National University (ANU) College of Business and Economics (CBE).
Hailing from Thailand, Yanin – an already experienced financial analyst – was drawn to ANU by its esteemed global reputation. At CBE, she undertook a Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS).
“The University’s commitment to academic excellence and research innovation set a high standard that I was eager to be a part of,” she says.
“The diverse range of courses offered, particularly in areas like Intelligent Business Analysis, Relational Database, and Business Analytics for Managers instantly captured my interest.”
With these offerings, Yanin saw an exciting opportunity to blend her background in business with cutting-edge data and technology concepts. An additional appeal to her was the CBE Internship course, an opportunity to implement the hands-on application of what she learned.
“CBE Internships aligned perfectly with my career aspirations, and provided a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical application, which enriched my learning journey,” she says.
An unexpected result of her studies was how her career aspirations changed. Yanin, whose ambition was purely to excel as a business analyst, found there was value in other career development.
“The MBIS encouraged me to hone my technical acumen, but also cultivate essential soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership,” she says.
“The holistic approach to education at ANU instilled in me a newfound confidence, empowering me to envision a broader spectrum of career possibilities. Consequently, my career goals have evolved to encompass not just the role of a business analyst, but a multifaceted professional capable of driving innovation and fostering collaboration across diverse domains.”
The course that appealed most to Yanin was Business Analytics for Managers. For her, understanding how to thoroughly leverage business-analytics tools to address real-world business challenges was crucial.
“Not only did the course equip me with practical skills, but it also fostered an environment where students could apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios,” says Yanin.
“Our lecturer – Dr David Bryant – was always approachable and willing to provide guidance. His encouragement to think innovatively and to explore beyond conventional boundaries greatly inspired me.”
Growing to love the nation’s capital, and its university
Throughout her studies, Yanin immersed herself in life at ANU, and attributes her positive experience to the relationships she built with students and staff.
“The unwavering support and dedication exhibited by the ANU staff left an indelible mark on me. Whether grappling with academic challenges or seeking guidance on degree-related matters, I always found reassurance in their expert counsel and willingness to assist. Their commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment significantly contributed to my personal and academic growth,” says Yanin.
“Another cherished memory is the bonds with fellow students, who quickly evolved into close friends. The multicultural environment facilitated rich cultural exchanges, allowing me to share facets of my Thai culture while immersing myself in the diverse perspectives and traditions of my peers.”
When asked about her favourite location, Yanin couldn’t go past Lake Burley Griffin.
“What draws me to Lake Burley Griffin is it’s the perfect destination for relaxation and activity. Whether it's enjoying a leisurely picnic with friends or simply unwinding by the lakeside, the ambience never fails to revive my spirit after long study sessions,” she says.
“The sight of people engaged in various activities, from jogging and cycling to walking their dogs, adds to the vibrant energy of the surroundings, making every visit a dynamic and memorable experience. Accessibility is another aspect that makes Lake Burley Griffin a favourite spot for me. Just a brief drive away, approximately five minutes from the ANU campus, it is effortlessly reachable.”
