Biography

Stephen Haslett is Emeritus Professor of Statistics at Massey University, New Zealand in the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, Research Centre for Hauora and Health, and Environmental Health Intelligence NZ. From 2015-2018, he was Professor and Director of the Statistical Consulting Unit at the Australian National University. He is a Professorial Fellow with NIASRA at the University of Wollongong, a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and a Chartered Statistician (UK). He has published over 130 refereed academic papers and has written more than 140 research and consulting reports. He has broad interests and has published in Mathematical Statistics, Medicine, Health Sciences, Psychology, Human Development, Official Statistics, Political Science, History, the Humanities, Social Sciences, Zoology, Botany, Marine Biology, Ecology, Economics, Veterinary Science, Horticulture, Agriculture, Labour Relations, Financial Auditing, Criminology, Geology, Epidemiology, Law, Business, Developmental Psychology, Sociology, Linguistics, and Education. His more theoretical research covers the theory of linear models; sample survey design, implementation, and analysis; small area estimation; and the analysis of sparse contingency tables. Over the last twenty years he has been directed and been principal statistician in a range of large-scale statistical modelling projects for small area estimation of poverty and of undernutrition in children for the United Nations including in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, and Timor-Leste. He has also designed, analysed, and been involved in the implementation of national sample surveys for the United Nations and associated agencies in Kiribati, Nepal, Solomon Islands, South Sudan, Tonga, Uganda, and Vanuatu.
