About the Program
Have a Chat with a member of the Executive Team or Functional Manager is an initiative developed by the CBE HR Team following feedback from the Business Planning Day to enhance employee engagement across the College.
It is an opportunity for professional staff to have a conversation with a member of the Executive team or Functional Manager. You choose the pace and agree on the location – some might want a cuppa, others a walk in the fresh air.
What to expect
The program offers a conversation for individuals or small group with a College Executive member or Functional Manager.
Each conversation will be driven by the goals of the individual and can range from sharing advice, career goals, gaining new perspectives, problem-solving, or being a sounding board for your thoughts.
The conversation partners are not counsellors, any individuals who need wellbeing support can contact the ANU’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) support services.
We recommend a walk around campus (observing social distancing and mask-wearing measures). For those who don’t want to walk, or the weather does not permit a coffee or bite to eat might be an alternative or a virtual walk or coffee for a COVID safe option.
How does it work?
- Each Manager will make themselves available for one (1) month blocks during which staff will reach out directly to set a mutually convenient time to chat.
- Conversations are 1 on 1 or limited to no more than two staff plus the Manager
- Managers have the freedom to reschedule if one party cannot make it
- There could be 1, 10, or 0 staff who reach out to chat with Managers
- Following each month’s conversations, a short HR survey will be sent to the appropriate Manager to measure participation and connection.
How to get the most from your chat:
So, you’ve made the decision to chat with a CBE Executive team member/professional staff manager? Great idea! Now, how will you get the most from your chat?
- Be prepared – is there a goal you are wanting to achieve, a problem that you have or want to understand something that the member your ‘Chat’ person can help you with?
- Be authentic – share your concerns and challenges so that your ‘chat’ support can be useful and practical.
- Be robust – enter discussions with an open mind and always consider alternate perspectives.
*** Staff should email the responsible manager directly to organise a time to chat ***
