Enrolment Guides

IMPORTANT: You must finish adding or swapping your courses in ANUHub by the deadline every semester. This deadline is always the Monday of Week 2. Late enrolment after this deadline is only permitted in exceptional circumstances. See Late Enrolment Tab below for more information.

Semester 1, 2026 - 11.50pm Monday 2 March
Semester 2, 2026 - 11.50pm Monday 3 August

Some courses will not allow you to enrol via ANUHub without a permission number. The box to enter a permission number shows up every time, so please try to complete the enrolment process first, and if an error message comes up you can email CBE Student Services with the course and a screenshot of the error for assistance.

Observing a course on Canvas

If you have a deferred or supplementary exam for a course that is a pre-requisite to a course you wish to do in the following semester, there are certain enrolment steps you will need to follow.

To help make this clearer, we will use the following terms:

Course A = the course you studied in the previous semester, that you have a deferred or supplementary exam for.
Course B = the course you wish to do in the next semester, that requires Course A as a pre-requisite.

You must not enrol into Course B via ANUHub until you have completed the deferred or supplementary exam  and have a final grade for Course A. ANUHub will let you enrol into Course B before you meet the pre-requisite requirement - this does not mean you are approved to do it. The CBE Student Services team reviews enrolments to make sure that students meet all course pre-requisites.  If you are enrolled in a course that you do not meet the pre-requisites for you will be removed from that course. This process happens several weeks into the semester, and you will not be able to enrol into a different course if you are removed as part of this process. This is why it is important that you only enrol into courses you are eligible for.

Observing

Until you pass Course A, you will need to keep up with Course B's content by being an observing student – this gives you access to the Canvas site for the course, so you can access all the materials. You will not be able to submit assessment items via Canvas as an observing student, please contact your course convener to arrange an alternate submission method if required.

Please use this form to apply to be an observing student

You must enrol into a backup course for the following semester, just in case you are not successful in Course A.  If Course A is a complusory course in your program and is on offer in the following semester, we suggest enrolling in it again as your backup.  If it is not compulsory, or is not on offer, then you can enrol into any other course that fits the requirements of your program as your backup.

Enrolling

If you pass Course A, but the grade is released after the ANUHub self enrolment deadline (the Monday of Week 2), then you will need to apply to enrol into Course B using the CBE Late Enrolment Process.  Please see the information under the Late Enrolment tab on this page for information on how to complete this.

If you have not been observing Course B since the beginning of the semester, your late enrolment application will not be approved.

If you do not pass Course A, then you will remain in your backup course for the following semester.

Late Enrolment Guide

Background

This guide outlines relevant dates, processes and key principles that will be used to consider late enrolment requests. This process applies to all students wishing to add or swap CBE courses. For non-CBE courses, please check with the relevant College.

Please be advised that the Late Enrolment procedure is NOT APPLICABLE for a student who is applying for overloading, for a 3rd attempt at a course, or to drop a course.  Please see Overloading tab and Retaking a Course tab for information on how to do this.

Important Dates

Semester 1, 2026

Week 2

Mon, 2 March

11.50PM Last day for students to add or swap courses on ANUHub.

Week 2 to Week 3

Semester 2, 2026

Week 2

Mon, 3 August

11.50PM Last day for students to add or swap courses on ANUHub.

Week 2 to Week 3

Tues 4 August – Mon 10 August

11.50PM

Students may submit a request for late enrolment into a course, for exceptional circumstances only (see process below), by providing a case and supporting documents.

Late enrolment requests will NOT BE ACCEPTED after this deadline.

Key Principles

Exceptional Circumstances

Students must explain the exceptional circumstances that prevented them from enrolling into the course themselves before the deadlines above. Requests for late enrolment based on exceptional circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis.

Approved Circumstances

Students applying for late enrolment may be approved to enrol if they fall under one or more of the following scenarios.  You will still need to submit an application as per the process detailed under "Process for Requesting Late Enrolment" below.

  1. If you failed a supplementary or deferred exam, and you wish to re-enrol into the failed course, and you can provide evidence that you have been keeping up with the content of the same course by observing the Canvas site in the current semester.

  2. If you passed a supplementary or deferred exam for a course that is a pre-requisite for a course you wish to enrol in, and you can provide evidence that you’ve been keeping up with content for this course by observing the Canvas site. For example - you have passed a deferred exam for ECON1101, and now wish to enrol into ECON1102.  You need to show that you are an observing student for ECON1102 and have been keeping up with the content in your late enrolment application.

Rejected Circumstances

Students applying for late enrolment will be not be approved to enrol if they fall into one or more of the following scenarios.  Please note, these are examples, and this list is not exhaustive.

  1. If you passed a supplementary or deferred exam for a pre-requisite course, but you have not been an observing student on Canvas and keeping up with content for the subsequent (next) course.  We do not support students starting a new course 2-3 weeks into the semester.

  2. If exceptional circumstances did not affect your ability to enrol into your courses before the deadline via ANUHub.  Not reviewing the Class Summary for a course and waiting until the first tutorial is not an exceptional circumstance

Process For Applying For Late Enrolment

Step 1.

Submit your application through Qualtrics.  You will be asked to enter the below information as part of the application. Please note the Qualtrics portal will not open until after the ANUHub self enrolment deadline has passed.

  • Reason(s) for not enrolling before ANUHub deadline (11.50PM on Monday of Week 2) that were beyond your control.
    • A lack of knowledge of ANU administrative processes is not considered beyond a person's control.
  • Evidence you have been keeping up with the content of the course(s) that you wish to enrol into.
    • A screenshot, clearly showing your name, of the course Canvas page (of the current semester) that you have been added to as an observing student. Please note that you need to be an observing student of the course before Monday Week 2. Please see the 'Observing a course on Canvas' tab for further information.
  • Information about the course(s) that you wish to enrol into:
    • Have you attempted any assessment items?
    • Is the course(s) available the following semester?
    • Is the course(s) a compulsory requirement in your program?
  • Additional relevant supporting documents (if any).

Step 2.

CBE Student Services team will compile your application for consideration by the Deputy Manager, CBE Student Services. You will receive an acknowledgement email within 3 business days.

Step 3.

You will be notified of the outcome of your application via email to your ANU Student Email account as soon as possible after receiving the acknowledgement email.  The Student Services Team appreciates that this is a very important request, and these applications are given priority to ensure that everyone is enrolled in their correct course(s) swiftly.

  • If your application is approved, you will be automatically enrolled into the course(s).  You may need to contact the lecturer regarding tutorial enrolment and potential mid-semester examination timetable(s).
  • If your request is rejected, you have the right of appeal. Instructions on how to submit an appeal will be emailed to you with the outcome of your application.

Overloading

Basic Information:

ANUHub will not allow you to self-enrol in more than 24 units (4 courses) a semester as this exceeds a standard study load.  If you wish to take more than 24 units (4 courses) in a given semester you must meet the criteria listed below before requesting an enrolment overload.

Prior to submitting an application to overload via the Manage My Degree eForm, via ANUHub please ensure you have enrolled in 24 units (4 courses) on ANUHub, have checked programs and courses to ensure the proposed 5th course fits within your program and you have satisfied any required prerequisites.

The deadline to apply for overload is the ANUHub self-enrolment deadline (Monday Week 2). ANUHub will still allow you to submit an application after this date, however you will need to include a statement explaining why you were unable to apply before the deadline, and supporting documentation from the lecturer.

Please note: if you wish to enrol in any courses that are not counted towards your program, please apply for non-award enrolment via the ANU Admissions Office before the start of the semester. You must consult with an academic advisor or your program convenor before enrolling.

Your previous academic history is taken into account when assessing your request.

Prerequisite Waivers

A prerequisite requirement is a course that the student must successfully complete before enrolling in a more advanced course. Prerequisite courses provide the foundation knowledge and understanding on which the more advance course is based.

In certain circumstances you may apply to have the prerequisite course requirement waived.

You will need to show that you have the required knowledge equivalent to the stated learning outcomes of the prerequisite course. The learning outcomes can be found on the course's Programs and Courses page, on the Overview tab.

Please note that prerequisite waivers are NOT available

  • for any FINM & STAT courses offered by the Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics
  • for any BUSN courses offered by the Research School of Accounting

The Research School of Economics (ECON, EMET & ECHI courses) require students to email enquiries.rse@anu.edu.au for assessment.

The Research School of Management (MGMT, MKTG, BUSI, INFS courses as well as BUSN7024 & BUSN8062) require students to contact the lecturers via enquiries.rsm@anu.edu.au

Electives

Students in a single degree program (e.g. Bachelor of Commerce) have at least 48 units of electives in their undergraduate studies. Electives can be selected from CBE courses or courses offered by other Colleges. No more than 10 courses (60 units) in a single degree can be taken at 1000 level - both core courses and electives contribute to this maximum.

Students wishing to undertake an out-of-college elective may contact the relevant College directly for further information or a permission code if required.

Student Responsibility:

It is the student's responsibility to select electives in such a way that:

  • they satisfy prerequisites for the corresponding course/s.
  • they conform to the rules set out in Programs and Courses or if unsure seek advice from the CBE office.

It is the student's responsibility to select the courses appropriate for their program. Please see our guide for creating a study plan to help ensure you are competing the required courses for your degree.

Retaking A Course and Third Attempts

Retaking A Failed Course

If you have failed a course for the first time and intend to enrol in it again, you can re-enrol yourself in the course through ANUHub, accepting the warning notice that will pop up.

Retaking A Course You've Failed Twice Before

If you have failed a course for the second time and intend to enrol in it for the third time you must complete an application for third attempt via the Manage my Degree section of ANUHub.  This application must include a statement that explains:

  • the reasons for your previous failures in this course; and
  • what strategies you will utilise to ensure you pass the course with this attempt.
  • evidence that you are observing the course via Canvas (see above for more information)

You should note that the third attempt is your final attempt at the course. If your statement does not demonstrate that you are taking appropriate steps to ensure you pass this course, your request may not be successful. Please refer to the expected academic performance for coursework students.

The deadline to apply for a third attempt is the ANUHub self-enrolment deadline (Monday Week 2). ANUHub will still allow you to submit an application after this date, however you will need to include a statement explaining why you were unable to apply before the deadline, and supporting documentation from the lecturer.

Retaking A Course For A Higher Grade

If you need to enrol in a course that you have already passed to achieve a higher grade, you must take the course on a non-award basis.  You cannot enrol in the same course twice under the same degree, and it cannot be counted twice. Only the first successful attempt will be included. Application forms for non-award enrolment are available for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Double-counting Guidance

A double-counted course refers to a course that may overlap between more than one major, minor or compulsory degree requirement.

  • If a course overlaps between a compulsory major and a compulsory degree requirement, you are required to complete the course only once and make up for the space left by double-counting with an ANU wide elective.
  • If you are in a Flexible Double Degree with two CBE degrees and a course can be used to fulfill both degrees’ compulsory requirements (as opposed to compulsory major or electives), you are required to complete the course only once and make up for the space left by double-counting with any course offered by ANU.
  • If you are in a Flexible Double Degree with only one CBE degree and a course is compulsory for both degrees, you are required to complete the course only once, and you will need to choose which degree this course will sit under.  If you choose to have it sit under the other College's degree, you will need to make up for the space left in the CBE degree with an ANU wide elective. If you choose to have the course sit under the CBE degree, you will need to discuss with the other College how they want you to fill the space left in their degree.
  • If a course can be used for an optional minor or major, you are required to complete the course only once and no replacement course is required because there is no unit space to fulfill. If a minor is a subset of all stated courses and/or prerequisites for a major, then completion of the major overrides completion of the minor, and only the major is regarded as having been completed.

Quick reference

Double-counting scenario

Replacement course

A course can be used for the compulsory major and the degree

ANU wide elective

A course can be used for two CBE degrees' core requirements (as opposed to compulsory major or electives)
