HIGHER DEGREE RESEARCH – PhD
ANU College of Business & Economics conducts
world class research and offers of a range of higher degree research
programs. Staff are active in research collaboration with other academic
institutions, industry and government. The College is home to the
Australian National Centre for Audit and Assurance Research (ANCAAR) and the
National Centre for Information Systems Research (NCISR).

The PhD Program
The PhD program in the ANU College of Business
and Economics fosters a sense of discovery and offers candidates the
opportunity to develop independent research skills in a particular field of
study. Candidates develop the ability to formulate a topic, develop the
skills and methods to investigate particular aspects of the topic and relate
the chosen topic to the broader knowledge of the discipline.
Completing the PhD demonstrates that he or she
can undertake critical analysis and can pursue scholarly research in a
methodical manner at an advanced level.
PhD candidates can satisfy their own quest for
knowledge in a particular area and often progress on to careers in academia,
public administration and business.

offers Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs in the following areas:
Program Requirements
Candidates for the PhD submit a thesis of not
more than 100,000 words. The thesis must make a substantial contribution to
learning and demonstrate a capacity to relate the research done by the
candidate to the broader framework of the relevant discipline within which
it falls, at the standard internationally recognised for the degree.
In some programs, candidates may also be
required to complete coursework in their first year of study.
Commencement and Duration
Students may commence their PhD studies at any
time after accepting an offer. Students should be aware of the timing of
any coursework component that they may be required to undertake in their PhD
studies and are required to consult with their PhD program convener before
enrolling.
A normal PhD program is completed over three
years full time.
Admission requirements
Potential candidates must have completed a
bachelor's degree with Honours of at least upper-second class in a relevant
discipline, or equivalent. Entry is also dependent upon the suitability of
the candidate to undertake a major research project and a topic area needs
to be approved.
In many programs, student progress is assessed
at the end of a compulsory coursework component. Students must meet
progress requirements set by the Program Convener in the relevant
discipline.
Students must submit an annual report on their
progress, and in most programs complete a mid-term review.
